Island Memories

Painting of totem poles on Cormorant Island.

Totem, from the Ojibwe word “odoodem” means “his kinship group.” Native people sculpted totems from large Western Red Cedar trees to recount historical legends, clan lineages and notable events. This painting is in memory of the totems seen on a visit to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island, which lies off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, BC Canada.
